Confident, self-assured, and bold, she does not look like your typical grandma. She walks two miles almost every morning and looks good for being eighty-one. Beth is able to play with her grandchildren and her great-grandchildren and enjoys spending time with her family. She is every grandchild’s dream: a giving, loving, caring, generous, gentle, joyful, uplifting grandma.
Seven years ago, I met this wonderful woman named Beth. My family and I attended her church and she welcomed us warmly.
"We are glad to have you here at our church today. My name is Beth," she introduced, "but call me Grandma."
Ever since that day, I have called her Grandma Beth. She was never a stranger to me, always warm and sincere. From the very beginning, she took me in and treated me like her own grandchild. She would even send me birthday and Chirstmas cards which would say, "For my loving Granddaughter." She would prepare meals for me and give me a place to sleep, if it was needed. She treated me like family.
Her attire is lovely, her smile is refreshing, her hugs comforting, her words encouraging. Something about her attire you will notice right away is that Beth loves black and white polka-dots; everything from hats, glasses, blouses, purses, and even her cell phone cover is splashed with polka-dots. She always has a smile on her face and is willing to help anyone in need. Beth greets everyone with a hug and treats everyone like a long lost friend. Everything that comes out of her mouth is always positive and makes me feel like the best person on the earth.
Her home of love and peace, with its sounds of laughter and joy, and smells of cookies and cakes, has become one of my favorite places. Beth always has her closest friends over to keep her company and no matter who walks through her doors, she will bake a cake for them. She always has cookies and ice cream on hand whenever someone needs a snack. Chocolate sheet cakes and chocolate chip cookies are her specialty; let me tell you, they are the best.
She would say, "Life is uncertain. Eat your dessert first."
She lives by herself and misses her true love of forty-eight years of marriage, but knows that she will be united again with him in heaven. In her spare time, she enjoys reading and gardening. Her favorite books are The Bible and anything written by Karen Kingsberry. Her garden is the most beautiful garden I have ever seen! Her rose bushes and her shrubs are so perfect. Her grass is always green and she always has hummingbirds and butterflies flying around.
Beth is a very intelligent woman. She has her Master’s Degree and was an English teacher for three years and a High School Counselor for four years. She also worked with the Academic Year in America (AYA) for ten years. AYA places Foreign Exchange students in local high schools for their junior and/or their senior year. She has visited the following countries with AYA: Germany, France, Spain, England, Ireland, Scotland, Denmark, Hungary, Austria, Brazil, Holland, and Czech. Republic. As you can tell, Beth likes to travel and she is not afraid to go to new places. She has also traveled to all the states except Alaska.
Over the years, Grandma Beth has become one of my closest friends. She has taught me the importance of life and how to live it to the fullest. She has always been willing to listen to me when I needed to talk and always ready to give advice. She supports me in everything I do and is always there when I need a friend. In the past when I would be going through something, she was the only person that I felt comfortable talking with. She has never turned me away because of what I have done. She still loved me just the same. Beth would cry and laugh with me and then go make me cookies. Beth will always be my grandma and will always have a special place in my heart.
