(4) Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast. It is not proud, (5)it is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. (6)Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth, (7)it always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. (8)Love never fails.
If you actually break these verses down and actually know the meaning of these verses. Then it will be easier to love the way God has called you to love.
patient: capable of bearing delay; not hasty. (2)Endurance, hopeful, forbearance
- Ex: saving your purity and sex till after marriage.
kind: friendly, generous, or warmhearted nature. (2)Showing sympathy or understanding. (3)Considerate, gentle
envy: a feeling of discontent and resentment aroused by another's desirable possessions or qualities accompanied by a strong desire to have them for oneself. (2)Jealous
boast: to speak with excessive pride; brag. (2)to talk pride in or be enhanced by the possession of
proud: feeling pleasurable satisfaction over an attribute or act by which one's stature or sense of self is measured. (2)having excessive self-esteem; haughty (3)arrogant
rude: ill-mannered; discourteous
self-seeking: pursuing only ones own interests
angered: incensed or enraged (2)strong feeling of displeasure of hostility
- Ex: not getting mad at every little thing, or if something doesn't go our way.
record: to set down for preservation in writing or other permanent form (2)something that relates to past events
wrongs: not in conformity with fact or truth; incorrect, unfair or unjust, inappropriate, immorally or unjustly (2)to treat dishonorably, to be unfaithful, immoral
delight: great pleasure or gratification; joy (2)to enjoy
evil: morally bad or wrong (2)something that causes harm, misfortune, or destruction/distress
rejoices: to feel or be joyful (2)to take joy in or give joy to
truth: conformity to fact or actuality; reality
protects: to from harm, attack, or injury; guard (2)to shield from danger
trusts: confidence in the integrity, ability, character, and truth of a person or thing (2)one in which confidence is placed (3)reliance on something in the future; hope
hope: to wish for something with expectation of its fulfillment (2)to have confidence, trust (3)to expect and desire
perseveres: to persist in or remain constant to a purpose, idea, or task in the face of obstacles or discouragement (2)patient endurance of hardships
fail: to prove deficient or lacking, perform ineffectively or inadequately (2)to be unsuccessful (3)to decline in strength or effectiveness; fade away (4)to omit or neglect (5)to fall short, disappear, disappoint
- Ex: you can't be quick to run away from everything when something doesn't go your way.
Love also is always supportive and always loyal.
supportive: to hold in position so as to keep from falling, sinking, or slipping (2)assisting (3)keeping up a persons spirits while they go through stress
loyal: faithful to a person, ideal, or custom
Not only does God tell us how to love others but he tells us who to love.
Matthew 22:37-39
(37)Jesus replied: " ' Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all you soul and with all you mind,' (38)This is the first and greatest commandment. (39)And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'
